The Martinis were a rock band formed in Los Angeles, California in 1993, consisting of Joey Santiago and his wife Linda Mallari. Emerging from the ashes of the influential alternative rock band Pixies, Santiago brought his distinctive guitar work to this new project, while Mallari contributed vocals and additional guitar. The duo formed the creative core of The Martinis following the Pixies' initial breakup, exploring a sound that blended alternative rock with power pop sensibilities and showcased a more melodic approach than Santiago's previous work.
The band released albums on multiple labels including Cooking Vinyl, Artist Direct, and Distracted/BMG, with their most notable release being the album Smitten in 2004. Santiago described the album as "a lot poppier and quirkier" than the band's previous material, with the record taking two years to write. The album was often regarded as similar-sounding to the Pixies' work, maintaining Santiago's characteristic guitar style. Their song "Free" gained significant exposure when it was featured in the movie Empire Records and included on the film's soundtrack album. The band collaborated with various musicians throughout their career, including drummers Josh Freese and Dave Lovering, with the latter appearing on their 2004 EP The Smitten Sessions.
