Artist BiographyAvailable in:

Amara La Negra, born Diana Danelys De Los Santos on October 4, 1990, in Miami, Florida, is a multifaceted American-Dominican artist: singer, actress, dancer, songwriter, and TV host. Raised by her single Dominican immigrant mother, Ana María Oleaga, in Miami’s Allapattah neighborhood, she faced poverty and anti-Black racism. At age 4, she debuted on Univision’s Sábado Gigante, becoming a regular for six years and appearing in ads for Hawaiian Punch and Disney. As a teen, she danced for icons like Celia Cruz and Tito Puente and briefly formed a girl group, Amara, adopting “La Negra” to embrace her dark skin amid colorist remarks.
Her music blends salsa, bachata, merengue, cumbia, reggaeton, R&B, and hip-hop, rooted in her Afro-Latin heritage. Her 2013 single “Ayy” gained traction in the Latin market, followed by collaborations (e.g., Mr. Vegas) and a multi-album BMG deal after starring in Love & Hip Hop: Miami (2018). On the show, she confronted colorism, earning Billboard’s “breakout star” title. She has acted in Fall Girls (2019), Bendecidas, and A Black Lady Sketch Show, and hosted Desiguales and Mira Quién Baila. By 2025, with nearly 3 million Instagram followers, Amara champions Afro-Latin empowerment, breaking socio-economic and cultural barriers.
