Annahstasia Enuke is a Nigerian-American singer-songwriter and visual artist from Los Angeles. At 17, she signed her first record deal after being discovered singing outside school, but the years that followed were marked by an industry trying to mould her in the wrong direction. Her debut plans were shelved by the label, and she had to wait out the remaining seven years of her contract before she could release music on her own terms. In the silence, she developed her voice – inspired by Nina Simone, Bill Withers, and Janis Joplin – into the rich, husky, and deeply distinctive instrument it is today. In 2019 came the debut EP Sacred Bull, and just two weeks later family friend Lenny Kravitz offered her a support slot on his European stadium tour. She said yes without having a band, manager, or label – found a gospel band, rehearsed for a week, and delivered.
The EPs Revival (2023) and Surface Tension (2024) gradually built her reputation on the independent folk scene. In April 2025, she played Kendrick Lamar’s love interest in the music video for “Luther” – a song that spent 13 consecutive weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and won two Grammy Awards. Her debut album Tether was released on 13 June 2025 on the independent label Drink Sum Wtr, and was met with widespread critical acclaim. Pitchfork awarded it 8.4 and the “Best New Music” designation, while NME hailed it as a genre-pushing debut with comparisons to Joni Mitchell, Nina Simone, and Sade. By late 2025, she had surpassed 200,000 monthly listeners on Spotify.
Tether blends modern folk with elements of blues, chamber pop, and tense rock, built around bare acoustic arrangements and Annahstasia’s deeply distinctive vocals. Her style is stripped-back and intimate – folk in its most raw and soulful form, where the voice carries everything. She is also an active model and visual artist, but music remains her first priority – even when the industry has done its best to convince her otherwise.
