Artist Biography
Available in: gb icon
Arcane started in 1986 with Byron Hawk (g) and Jim King (d), looking to start a new project off the heels of their previous band. In 1987, after trying out a number of guitarists, bassists and singers, Doug Judah (g) returned from a previous project and Byron decided to sing. Finally, the band added Kurt Joye (b) and started writing songs and playing live.

In 1988, they brought in Oscar Barbour (v) to provide a wider range for the style they were developing from their early influences of Iron Maiden, Anthrax, Metallica, Fates Warning & King Diamond. The band recorded their initial demo, Mirror of Deception, and began spreading it around the tape-trading underground.

After positive responses from fanzines and tape-traders, Arcane decided to record another demo in 1989, and shop around for an indie label. Before they could find a deal, King left for personal reasons. Kelly Sanford was brought in from The Bang Gang, which broke-up after their lead singer/guitarist Doyle Bright joined Rigor Mortis.

In 1990, the band released Destination Unknown, their debut full-length album, through California's Wild Rags Records. With its release, Arcane received strong reviews in magazines such as Metal Forces and Rock Hard, and played extensively with national acts such as Fates Warning, Sanctuary, Death Angel, Forbidden, Atrophy and M.O.D., as well as regional acts such as Watchtower, Helstar, Solitude Aeturnus, Gammacide, Talon/Sedition, Devastation, Dead Horse, Oliver Magnum, Anialator, and many others.

In 1991, Sanford left, with Anthony Smircic joining as the new drummer. Judah left shortly afterward, but the band continued to play live and write new material, allowing them to record a new demo. In 1992, they inked a deal with Germany's Decision Records for the release a new record, but the two went their separate ways before additional material could be recorded. In 1994, Decision released the demo material as the Ambiguity EP.

The band later struck a deal with Texas-based BrainTicket Records to re-release the albums with remixed demo material and a live DVD.

Compilation appearances:
- "Nescient Creation" on Underdogs Vol. I (Black Bull, early '90s, Tape)
- "Analysis Incomplete" on Weird Thoughts Volume 1 ‎(Rising Sun Prod., 1992)
