Hanumankind is the stage name of Sooraj Cherukat (born 1992), a rapper, singer, songwriter and actor from Kerala, India. He gained mainstream popularity in India and internationally with his 2024 single "Big Dawgs," featuring producer Kalmi, whose remix added American rapper ASAP Rocky.
Cherukat was born in Malappuram, Kondotty, Kerala. His father's work in the oil industry took the family to Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, Dubai, Egypt, Qatar and Italy before they settled in Houston, Texas, when he was in second grade; there he was exposed to Southern hip hop artists such as Chamillionaire, Three 6 Mafia, Project Pat, UGK and DJ Screw, alongside System of a Down. He attended Houston Community College in 2011 before returning to India in 2012 to study business administration at PSG College in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. He briefly worked at Goldman Sachs in 2014 and also as a personal trainer.
He began his music career performing at NH7 Weekender and, after a 2018 SoundCloud mixtape (959 Mixtape) and the single "Super Mario," released his debut EP Kalari in 2019, led by the single "Daily Dose." The name Hanumankind combines the Hindu deity Hanuman with "mankind." His sophomore EP, Surface Level, followed in 2020, alongside singles including "DAMNSON" and "Go To Sleep" and collaborations such as "THAT'S A FACT" and "Enemies" with Yashraj. He contributed "Maadeva," with Charan Raj and Sanjith Hegde, to the Kannada film Popcorn Monkey Tiger, and released "Genghis" in 2021, addressing police brutality and social commentary. His musical style draws heavily on Kendrick Lamar, J. Cole and Logic.
Cherukat's breakthrough came in 2024: his song "The Last Dance" featured on the soundtrack of the Malayalam film Aavesham, he was named to Rolling Stone India's inaugural "Future of Music" list, and "Big Dawgs" brought him wide recognition, aided by a music video shot at a "well of death" motorcycle attraction in his hometown district of Ponnani. He also acted in the 2024 Malayalam film Rifle Club, directed by Aashiq Abu. In 2025 he released "Run It Up," performed at Netflix's Tudum event, appeared on Colors Show, and headlined the "OTW Tour" behind his debut mixtape Monsoon Season, released July 25, 2025, with guests including Denzel Curry, Roisee, ASAP Rocky, Rudy Mukta and Maxo Kream. He also featured on Skepta, Fred Again and PlaqueBoyMax's "Victory Lap Three" and contributed two tracks to the soundtrack of the 2025 Hindi film Dhurandhar. In November 2025 he made his first headlining appearance at Rolling Loud India. As of July 2025 he lives in Bengaluru. In 2026 he contributed the track "See U in Hell," with Papa Roach, to the second season of Netflix's Devil May Cry animated series, and was named to GQ India's "Most Influential Young Indians of 2026."
