Kai Gundelach (born 1989) is a Norwegian electronic-pop artist based in Oslo, known by his stage name Gundelach. He began his musical journey as a DJ and guitarist in Oslo’s club scene as a teenager, keeping his own music private for years before his debut single Alone in the Night (2015) introduced him as a distinctive new voice.

His self-titled EP Gundelach (2016), featuring the singles “Spiders” and “Fjernsynet,” quickly drew international attention – including airplay on Pharrell Williams’ Beats 1 show – and established his signature sound: a blend of analog synths, deep percussion, and dark falsetto vocals. His debut album Baltus (2018) and its follow-up My Frail Body (2020) solidified his reputation, with both albums earning Spellemann Award nominations for electronic and production categories.

In 2022, he released the two-part concept project Shape / Shifter, later combined into the album ShapeShifter. The first part (Shape) leans into live drums and acoustic intimacy, while Shifter is dominated by synths and electronics. The album draws inspiration from Theodor Kittelsen’s depictions of the water spirit Nøkken, exploring transitions between still landscapes and movement, despair and joy. Tracks like “Golden,” “Vi er nærme nå,” “Vinter,” and “Arms Around Me” showcase Gundelach’s ability to write music that is both vulnerable and hypnotic.

By 2025, he had released several new singles, including “Det døende lysets dunkle skygger”, “Mørket / Vrede”, “In Front Of You”, and “Vind” – striking examples of his ability to create introspective, electronically driven soundscapes infused with warmth and tension.

His live shows are described as immersive journeys, with synths, guitars, and ambient visuals shaping an atmospheric experience. Gundelach has toured across Europe, including headlining venues like Rockefeller, offering performances that balance experimental electronics with melodic intimacy.

Gundelach’s music feels like personal, melancholic dreams framed by pulsing electronics. It’s easy to drift into his analog, hypnotic soundscapes, yet beneath the surface there’s always an emotional anchor – a sense of longing, unease, or intensity. With his latest work, Gundelach continues to explore the borders between sound and feeling, shaping a musical universe that is constantly evolving.
