Artist Biography

Gjenfødt Kultur — often simply called GK — are a rap collective from Larvik. Three rappers: Endre, Amin and Hani, with Hani also producing all the music. They made their album debut with Koloritt in 2021, and over the following two years followed up with an EP, a mixtape and singles including the six-minute hip-hop epic “GKUltra”. The inspiration comes from sample-based hip-hop of the 2000s, with Madvillainy by MF Doom and Madlib as a declared cornerstone. But GK do not settle for obvious references: one of their samples is taken from the Brazilian jazz musician Francisco Tenório Júnior, a man who mysteriously disappeared in the ‘70s one day when he went out to buy cigarettes. As they put it themselves: “We don’t go for typical samples. We go for what’s a bit more abstract and out there.”

The music is sample-based, jazz-inflected and deliberately atypical for Norwegian rap — more closely related to the dusty, abstract hip-hop of New York’s underground scene than to most of what happens in the Norwegian mainstream. The lyrics blend personal stories, social commentary and pop-cultural references with a playful engagement with conspiracies, addiction and identity. There is a literary ambition in the words that never weighs them down, and a willingness to let the songs take the time they need — six minutes is not unusual. The Norwegian music press has called them “culturally significant”, and it is hard to argue with them.

Live, Gjenfødt Kultur have built a reputation as something more than a concert. They were singled out as one of the great highlights of the Øya Festival 2024, have played sold-out shows and produced a concert film for NRK. They hand out roses to the audience, the set design feels handmade, and the visual language — merch, videos, graphics — is an integral part of the universe. When you go to a GK show, you step into something that has been built from the ground up, with no shortcuts.
