Tøyen Holding fills a big gap in Norwegian rap. There are plenty of people in Norway making catchy and aesthetically accomplished hip-hop, but nobody writes lyrics like Mest Seff & Fredfades. Tøyen Holding is reference-heavy and sophisticated, while simultaneously being light-hearted, politically incorrect and never "conscious."
Buckshot flies in all directions as the duo jazz up illustrative and decadent collages consisting of designer dishes, graffiti like the last surviving punk, Marianne, sneakerheads in wheelchairs, marshmallows, trips to vineyards with promiscuous and liberated women, hijackers, exotic dishes, gravestones and rare textiles.
Since the first album dropped, the duo have done a handful of sold-out concerts in Oslo, Bergen and Trondheim. The release show in 2017 exceeded all expectations. The streets were not ready, and neither was Paul's Boutique. Audience members had their tickets refunded against doctor's notes confirming diagnosed claustrophobic conditions. Others simply couldn't get in and had to make do with a durag from Platepappa at the ticket window (these were unfortunately sold out before Futur store managed to update the Hypebeast tab in Safari and conclude that this was a garment Oslo residents were actually capable of sporting).
After the elf-land of Norway finally got its act together and caught up with the self-titled cult classic, the fanbase grew as fine as a truffle pig, and neither Fredfades nor Mest Seff has been able to step out for a drink in Oslo without people coming over and pestering them something terrible.
The long-awaited second album arrived in 2020 — something more minimalist, mysterious and intelligent — followed by the third in 2023. It has turned out that there are three years between each time Fredfades & Mest Seff decide to drop an album, and there are apparently always fourteen tracks on the records. So it has been.
And believe it or not: TH4 is on its way. The single "Født Nice" from May 2026 is the first taste. The timeline is as always unknown, but there is reason to be excited.
