Charlotte Dos Santos was born in 1990 in Oslo and grew up in Bærum with a Norwegian mother and a Brazilian father. Her music draws inspiration from samba and bossa nova, but also from flamenco and Arabic music — from basically everywhere except her home country. She studied at Berklee College of Music in Boston, where she earned a bachelor's degree in Contemporary Writing and Production and jazz vocals.
As an artist she blends soul, jazz and bossa nova in a sound reminiscent of Minnie Riperton and Linda Lewis. Since her critically acclaimed 2017 EP Cleo, she has accumulated over 26 million streams, earned praise from The Fader, Pitchfork, Bandcamp and Clash, and won a Norwegian Grammy for Best R&B/Soul album.
The latest chapter of her career is perhaps the most personal. After becoming a mother she took some time away from the spotlight — and returned renewed, with a fresh perspective on both life and music. The EP Neve Azul (2025), recorded live to analogue tape, is described as the first chapter in a larger exploration of motherhood and identity — a subtle collection of sumptuous cuts that mediate transformation and self-reflection, set atop rich, luscious instrumentation. She also has synaesthesia, which helps her form musical ideas.
One of the most distinctive and moving voices in Norwegian and international neo-soul — don't miss this.
