Bendik is the stage name of Silje Halstensen, born in Bergen in 1990. She grew up in Bodø from the age of seven, attended the music programme at Bodø upper secondary school – alongside future artists like Sondre Justad and Petter Unstad of Kråkesølv – and earned a bachelor’s degree in music technology from NTNU in Trondheim. As a teenager she started the band “Laura,” and when she decided at 18 to go solo, she chose the male name “Bendik” – partly inspired by a cousin, but also as a deliberate move against male dominance in the music industry. Spice Girls’ “Girl Power” and the DIY ethos of hardcore punk had left equally deep marks. Attention from NRK Urørt with the single “Igjen” led her to the Urørt finals in 2012 – the same year her debut album Drømmen gjør meg ingenting was released. Since then she has released No går det over (2014), Fortid (2016), the mini-albums Det går bra and Sove, and the full-length Liv (2022). She has been nominated for the Spellemannprisen three times – for indie and twice as pop soloist – and for Live Artist of the Year at P3 Gull in 2013 and 2015.
The single “Perfekt” (2018) became a radio favourite that has now surpassed ten million streams, revealing a new side: from the raw emotions and difficult love of Fortid to a warm, sincere love story. Her lyrics revolve around feelings and contrasts, and she has been open about anxiety issues that shape her songs. Musically, Bendik has been in constant motion – from electronic indie pop with a massive soundscape to quieter, more stripped-back compositions during the pandemic, and now back to something more band-driven. In 2025 she released the EP Hold ut, and on 16 January 2026 came the album Hysj – where contrasts and big emotions are once again at the centre. Bergens Tidende’s reviewer declared she should make Bergen’s rockers tremble. Beyond music, Bendik has written and performed theatre music at Det Norske Teatret, participated in the TV show 71 grader nord, and appeared as a guest on Hver gang vi møtes. In 2007 she co-founded the music festival Kjerringråkk in Bodø, aimed at promoting women’s creativity, and she sings everything in her Bergen dialect – even after a lifetime in Bodø and Oslo.
