Jean-Claude Petit, born on 14 November 1943 in Vaires-sur-Marne, is a French pianist, composer and arranger.
After accompanying jazzmen during his adolescence (Dexter Gordon, Johnny Griffin, Kenny Clarke, etc.), he graduated from the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Paris with first prizes in harmony, fugue and counterpoint and began working in 1966 for the world of variety music. He wrote and produced the arrangements for the records of Julien Clerc, Serge Lama, Mireille Mathieu, Sheila, Claude François, Willy Deville, Joan Baez, Michel Sardou, Alain Souchon, Sylvie Vartan, Jairo, Mort Shuman, Gilbert Bécaud...
He starts working for the cinema as Michel Magne's musical ghostwriter. He sold the rights to an electronic music album composed in 1976 to the director Alejandro Jodorowsky so that the music could be used as a soundtrack for the film Tusk. He wrote the music for successful films such as Jean de Florette or Manon des sources, by Claude Berri, and Cyrano de Bergerac, by Jean-Paul Rappeneau; with this composition he won a César and a Victoire de la musique in 1991.
Jean-Claude Petit also produces, plays and composes jazz-rock albums: Babel (with guitarist Philip Catherine), The best of all possible worlds (with Celmar Engel)...
In 1995, he was elected president of ADAMI, a position he held until 1998.
In June 2013, he was elected chairman of the board of directors of SACEM.
In 2014, he wrote his first opera, Colomba, adapted from Prosper Mérimée's novella and presented at the Marseille municipal opera.
He collaborated on the song Le Secret Perdu, the first single from Pascal Obispo's 10th album (Billet de femme), released in February 2016.
