Alain Oulman was a Portuguese songwriter born on June 15, 1928, in Cruz Quebrada, Lisbon district, into a traditional Jewish family. He was responsible for some of the biggest hits of Amália Rodrigues.

Alain Oulman was He was passionate about books, music and Amália Rodrigues,who was presented in 1962 by Luís de Macedo, diplomat in Paris, during a vacation at Praia do Lisandro,near Ericeira. Oulman showed Amalia a song he had composed on the piano, about the poem Vagamundo by Louis de Macedo.

The album Busto, released in 1962, marked the beginning of Alain Oulman's collaboration with Amália. It was he who took the Portuguese poets, such as Luís de Camões,David Mourão-Ferreira, Alexandre O'Neill or Manuel Alegre,into Amália's house. Alain Oulman is also considered the main responsible for a profound change in the music that accompanied it.

It was also he who composed the song of the well-known fado My land is Viana by the poet Pedro Homem de Mello, from the album Cantigas in an Ancient language.

Oulman, left-wing person, is chased and arrested by pide. Amalia did everything she could to support him during his arrest. He's deported to France. "His active solidarity with the Portuguese anti-fascist struggle led to him being arrested by pide, being expelled from Portugal and permanently setting himself up in Paris,"reads the official 'website' of the Communist Party Portuguese.

Oulman wrote the song for My Love is Sailor,based on A Trova do Amor Lusíada, which Manuel Alegre wrote when he was imprisoned in Caxias.

On the album Com Que Voz, recorded in 1969 but edited only the following year, Amália sings names such as Cecilia Meireles, Alexandre O'Neill, David Mourão-Ferreira, Manuel Alegre, Camões, Ary dos Santos and Pedro Homem de Mello. The album will receive the IX Italian Record Critics Award (1971), the Paris City Grand Prix and the Paris Disco Grand Prix (1975).

After 25 April 1974,Alain Oulman was part of the minority that defended Amália when she was accused of being linked to the previous regime, writing letters to the newspapers "Republic" and "The Century".

Alain Oulman died in Paris on March 29, 1990, when he was 61 years old.

On June 9, 1993, he was awarded, posthumously, the degree of Commander of the Order of Infante D. Henrique.
