Vincent Courtois , born on21 mars 1968in Paris , is a French jazz cellist and composer
Son of the painter Jacques Courtois , he began classical cello at age 6 in Erwan Fauré's class at the Aubervilliers conservatory where he won first prize in cello and chamber music. He then studied with Roland Pidoux and Frédéric Lodéon and in 1987 obtained the higher diploma in execution from the Ecole Normale de Paris.
Along with his classical studies, Vincent Courtois discovered jazz and improvisation with Jean-Charles Capon and Dominique Pifarély . In 1988, he played his first concerts in the byte Christian Escoudé then joined the Swing String System of Didier Levallet. It was at this time that he formed his first quartet with which he recorded two discs "Cello News" and "Pleine Lune". Many musicians then called on him, in particular Martial Solal who invited him to play as a duo.
In 1993 he founded the Pendulum Quartet with, among others, Julien Lourau , the group Tukish Blend and the Zebra 3 trio with Franck Tortiller and Xavier Desandre . A year later he recorded the Marvelous album with Michel Petrucciani , Tony Williams and Dave Hollandand joined the "Quartet Opera" of Gérard Marais. He also begins to work with the Rita Mitsouko and accompanies them on the Acoustic tour.
In 1995, Vincent Courtois gave his first solo concerts, played in François Corneloup's septet and met Louis Sclavis to work on film and theater music. He joined the ONJ of Didier Levallet and the quintet of Rabih Abou-Khalil with whom he recorded two discs "Yara" and "Cactus of Knowledge".
In 1998 he played in the ensemble of Pierre Favre and in the trio of Yves Robert . In 2000, he created three trios and a quintet with Pierre Favre, Noël Akchoté , Lucilla Galeazzi , Michel Godard , Marc Ducret , Dominique Pifarély , Cyril Atef , John Greaves and Nicolas Mizrachi. He released the record Translucide and the following year The Fitting Room with Marc Ducret and Dominique Pifarély .
In 2002, he participated in the Napoli's Walls Quartet by Louis Sclavis and created the Six Windows Trio at the Banlieues Bleues Festival with Ellery Eskelin and Sylvie Courvoisier .
In 2003, he recorded "Trouble with happiness" with John Greaves and Sophia Domancich .
In 2004, he met the slammer Ze Jam and recorded "Les Contes de Rose Manivelle" with, among others, Louis Sclavis and created "What do you mean by silence?" with François Merville, Marc Baron and singer Jeanne Added .
In 2006, he recorded the quartet's first album "What do you mean by silence?" joined by Yves Robert .
In 2008, he recorded "The Airplane Man" with Ze Jam.
In 2010, he founded the formation "WAT" with Maxime Delpierre, Matthieu Jérome, Olivier Lété and David Aknin and recorded his first solo album "L'inprévu" . He is named a knight in the Order of Arts and Letters 1 .
In 2011, he recorded the second album of the quartet "What do you mean by silence?" , creates a new Trio "The Mediums" with the German saxophonist Daniel Erdmann and Robin Fincker, and to carry out his various projects he founded his company "La Compagnie de l'Imprévu".
In 2012, he created the third and last part of the Frivolous Mechanics Trilogy, "Le Roi Pêcheur" with Ze Jam Afane. He collaborates with the director Bruno Geslin , Compagnie La Grande Mêlée and takes part in the play "Un homme qui dort" based on the text by Georges Perec.
In 2013, following a creative residency at the Friche Belle de Mai in Marseille with Christian Caujolle and photographer Michael Ackerman, the project "Intuition" was created, a real exploration of the intimate in its encounter with photography . He is also in artistic residency in Cap, current music scene of Aulnay sous Bois for three years.
In 2014, he recorded "Live en Berlin" with double bass player Joëlle Léandre .
In 2015, he once again brought together saxophonists Robin Fincker and Daniel Erdmann, also invited pianist Benjamin Moussay and with the artistic complicity of Gérard de Haro from Label la Buissonne, he recorded "WEST". The same year, he extended his adventure with the Trio Mediums and created "Bandes Originales", a free tribute to film music composers.
