Notorious for their controversial live shows, THE STALIN were formed in 1980 by the vocalist and band leader Michiro Endo (遠藤ミチロウ) on the ashes of Endo's previous band, Jiheitai (自閉体). Endo remains the only surviving member through all the lineup changes, and he is known for saying "THE STALIN is not a band, it's rather a name for my own musical activity". In 1985, THE STALIN disbanded, but continued releasing remakes and live albums. In 1987, Endo formed another band, VIDEO STALIN (ビデオスターリン), which disbanded a year after, leaving a place for Endo's next band, STALIN (スターリン). The latter stopped its activity in 1993; however, Endo still occasionally performs THE STALIN's songs onstage.
Notable STALIN fans include Hisashi Imai of BUCK-TICK. A tribute to THE STALIN was released in 2001, with artists such as Lolita No.18 and Inugami Circus-Dan participating.
