Artist Biography

Is there a way to fuse the confusion and technological distortion of the new Millennium and the melancholy romanticism that shaped the sound of the Eighties? UnterArt face this central question of their artistic endeavors with a dark and apocalyptic approach.

The basic principle that shapes the group´s work is the combination of the very different pref-erences that its members adhere to. Thomas Stein is responsible for the flowing, melodic lines, while Grigory Feil, very much influenced by the impressions of urban life in Hamburg, adds the rhythmic- and the noise-elements. UnterArt stand for large scale productions and the excessive use of the newest technology for sound-manipulation and -creation. Minimalism is their declared enemy. Only through the merging of the different tracks into a classic song structure can their songs develop their characteristic depth and emotional level … a balance of noise and grace that the group seeks to unveil as their trademark sound.

Founded in early 2004 by Thomas Stein and Grigory Feil, the tracks "Damn my Soul" and "Kill Your Heart" and a remix by Andy LaPlegua were already released in the same year on the bonus disc included with the Compilation "Industrial for the Masses Vol. 2". The track "Ugly" on "Machineries of Joy Vol. 3" followed soon thereafter and "Just You Wait" was released in mid 2005 on "Awake the Machines Vol. 5". The band had its debut live perform-ance in August 2005 supporting Mexican legend Dulce Liquido. Shortly after that, Chris Harms joined UnterArt, effectively adding his vocal spectrum to the concept of the group: to create a balance between noise and grace.
