Shay Lia, born Shanice Dileita Mohamed on September 8, 1993, is a French-Djiboutian singer and songwriter, born in France, raised in Djibouti, and based in Montreal. Her musical style blends contemporary R&B, alternative R&B, afrobeats, funk, and soul, characterized by sensual melodies, danceable basslines, and vibrant energy. Influenced by her multicultural roots and artists like Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill, and the electronic productions of Kaytranada, she creates immersive, cinematic music.
She gained recognition through collaborations with Kaytranada, notably on "Leave Me Alone" (99.9%, 2016) and "Chances" (2018), the latter earning a SOCAN Songwriting Prize nomination in 2019. Her debut solo EP, Dangerous (2019), explores themes of love, empowerment, and identity with polished production, earning a Polaris Music Prize nomination.
