VILE formed in 1996 in the San Francisco Bay Area and rose to be considered a top act in American "second wave" death metal music. They were inspired by bands such as Morbid Angel, Cannibal Corpse, Atheist, Monstrosity and other Floridian and American death metal bands. VILE always offered a professional, well produced sound with a strong sense of groove that makes their music catchy while still retaining progressive elements.

Originally, VILE signed to Relapse Records in 2000 via A&R man Andy Hozner who also signed Nile, Cephalic Carnage, Origin and others. That deal changed in 2001 and VILE moved to Listenable Records in France, and also signed a North American deal with Unique Leader Records.

Their discography includes 4 studio albums, 3 demos and a compilation CD as well as a number of live DVDs. VILE has toured North America and Europe extensively as well as Japan in 2013. The band is currently on hiatus (2018) as co-founder Colin Davis ramps up his new act The 01EXPERIENCE.
