girl in red is the stage name of Norwegian singer-songwriter and producer Marie Ulven Ringheim (born 16 February 1999, Horten). She rose from DIY bedroom pop in 2018 with viral tracks like we fell in love in october and quickly became a queer icon, celebrated for her candid lyrics about love, sexuality, and mental health.
Her debut album if i could make it go quiet (2021) was critically acclaimed, earning multiple Spellemann Awards including Songwriter of the Year and Album of the Year. The record explored themes of depression, anxiety, unrequited love, and queer identity with raw intimacy and lyrical honesty.
In April 2024, girl in red released her second studio album I’m Doing It Again Baby! through Columbia Records. Singles like “Too Much,” “Doing It Again Baby,” and “You Need Me Now?” featuring Sabrina Carpenter showcased a shift toward a more expansive alt-pop sound, combining emotional vulnerability with punchy, confident melodies. Her 2024 tour across North America and Europe, including sold-out shows in New York, Los Angeles, and Oslo, earned praise for blending indie intimacy with arena-ready energy.
In early 2025, she released two deeply personal singles: “Confession”, a short, haunting acoustic piece, and “Hemingway”, a ballad reflecting on her struggles with benzodiazepine dependency and depression during long periods of touring. She later revealed that she spent much of the year in treatment and is now three months sober, calling “Hemingway” her most personal track to date.
Listening to girl in red feels like opening a diary full of yearning, queer love, and emotional struggle—delivered through melodies that range from soft, whispered confessions to bold, anthemic alt‑pop. Her music radiates both vulnerability and strength, speaking directly to anyone who has ever felt lost, in love, or on the edge of growing up.
