Artist Biography
Available in: gb icon
Perhaps the most influential and important Avant Garde Hip-Hop song of our century.
When I watch this video, I see the obvious influence towards another artist Reh Dogg and his music video called 'Why Must I Cry'? She intentionally uses a Panasonic VHS camera to show that she is from the ghetto, she is struggling in the 'D', and she can't afford a higher quality camera because of poverty.

Analyzing the lyrics of T-Baby:
"It's so cold in 'da 'D'
How 'da fuck do we 'posed to keep peace.
It's all in 'da Nigga's mind,
workin' and doin' time."

The first line shows that it is obviously cold in the 'D', which some may say as being the city of Detroit, Michigan, but because of the depth and genius of Tbaby's lyrics, it can also symbolize the whole world, or really anywhere struck with poverty. It shows that these places these days are harsh and unforgiving for the kids in the 'ghetto'.

As for the second line, TBaby is taking note on the fact that in the 'D', again, the unforgiving, cold world has no room for error. Living in poverty is hard enough as it is with all the gang related violence, and all Tbaby wants is peace. In the third line, Tbaby wants to make it known that the young poor children born into poverty (whom she refers to as 'Niggas' in the video) have no choice but to live and die for their 'hood'.

As the fourth and final line states (which coincides to the third line), some hoodlums try to think about working, but some just cant fight the fact that they will go to jail for their crimes to the 'D'.

This song is a perfect satirical piece towards the current age in hip-hop. What TBaby did with the beat is beautiful. The fact that her singing is off beat throughout the song is a way for her to keep the listener unsettled, as they should be when dealing with drama not only from the 'D' but from the whole world, too.
