Jürgen Jürgens (born October 5, 1925 in Frankfurt am Main , † August 4, 1994 in Hamburg ) was a German choir director and conductor .
Jürgens received his musical education in his hometown with Kurt Thomas at the Musisches Gymnasium and later studied with Konrad Lechner in Freiburg . In 1961 Jürgens was appointed lecturer in "Akademischen Musikpflege" and on February 15, 1966 he was appointed University Music Director at the University of Hamburg . In 1973, he was appointed university professor. In 1955 he founded the Monteverdi Choir Hamburg , which he headed until his death, and is particularly concerned with the care of old music and the work of Claudio Monteverdidedicated. Together with the choir he recorded numerous recordings, many of which were considered record-priced. He was made famous by the recording of Il Vespro della Beata Vergine (Marienvesper) by Claudio Monteverdi with the Monteverdi Choir Hamburg and the Concentus Musicus Wien in an edition created by him for the recording. Jürgens was also the publisher of numerous musical editions, gave conducting masterclasses and was a juror in various choir competitions.
In 1985 he was honored by the Senate of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg with the Biermann Ratjen Medal for his artistic service to the city of Hamburg, 1991 with the Johannes Brahms Medal . He was buried in the main cemetery Ohlsdorf in Hamburg.
