Professor Werner Tripp, principal flutist of the Vienna Philharmonic for many years, passed away unexpectedly on December 15, 2003, at the age of 73.
Born in Graz on April 22, 1930, Werner Tripp began his study of the flute under Engelbert Pirker before continuing on with Hans Reznicek (1910-1979) at the Vienna Academy. Tripp, who won several international competitions (Vienna, Munich, Geneva and Prague), was engaged by the Graz Philharmonic in January 1955, but moved on to the Vienna State Opera Orchestra in September of the same year. He joined the Association of the Vienna Philharmonic in 1961 and advanced to the position of first flutist in 1962. At this time Professor Tripp, who also held a law degree, also began an intensive career as pedagogue at the Vienna Academy. Upon being named full professor in 1977, he left the orchestra to devote himself fully to his teaching and soloist career.
