Born in Genoa in 1976 , Luigi Gaggero studied percussion with Andrea Pestalozza in Genoa and the cymbalum with Márta Fábián in Budapest . In 2000, he joined the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler in Berlin where he studied with Edgar Guggeis and Rainer Seegers and he brilliantly won first prize (Konzertexamen).
As a cymbalist, he performs as a soloist and chamber musician throughout Europe and collaborates with various contemporary music ensembles (Accroche Note, Route, MusikFabrik, Scharoun, Contrechamps, Oriol), and numerous orchestras ( the Berlin and Munich Philharmonic Orchestras, the Berlin National Symphony Orchestra, the Brussels La Monnaie Theater Orchestra or the SWR Freiburg Symphony Orchestra) under the direction of Claudio Abbado, Pierre Boulez, Peter Eötvös, Kent Nagano and Riccardo Muti , Zoltán Peskó or Simon Rattle.
As a soloist he has performed with the NDR Hamburg Symphony Orchestra, Filarmonisch Orkest Hilversum, Münchner Kammerorchester and Orchester der Komischen Oper Berlin, among others. He has created pieces by Luca Antignani , Ivan Fedele , Luca Francesconi , Stefano Gervasoni , Konstantia Gourzi , Mauro Lanza and Alessandro Solbiati . He is the 2000 and 2002 winner of the Hanns-Eisler Awards for the performance of contemporary music.
Since 2004 he is a cymbalum teacher at the Conservatoire de Strasbourg .
