Founded 1833 as “Stadtorchester”, renamed 1983 to “Robert-Schumann-Philharmonie”.
The Robert Schumann Philharmonic Orchestra is one of the most traditional orchestras in Germany. Founded in 1833 as a city orchestra by Wilhelm August Mejo in Chemnitz, the orchestra increasingly gained supraregional significance. With the opening of the Chemnitz opera house in 1909, another heyday began. Under Oscar Malata, the first music director of the "Städtische Kapelle" from 1910 to 1931, guest conductors such as Richard Strauss, Fritz Busch, Otto Klemperer, Bruno Walter, Eric Kleiber, Arthur Nikisch, Arnold Schoenberg, Max Reger and Paul Hindemith came to Chemnitz.Nach During the Second World War, Rudolf Kempe was the first chief of the orchestra. GMD Robert Satanowski (1960-1962) contributed significantly to the expansion of contemporary repertoire. In the almost 20-year tenure of GMD Dieter-Gerhardt Worm (1975 to 1993), the orchestra received its current name in 1983 on the occasion of its 150th anniversary. There were first important guest performances in Germany and abroad as well as CD recordings.
The goal of the chief conductor Oleg Caetani (1996 to 2001) was to achieve the high artistic quality of the orchestra, which was present in the concert, also in the opera. With Tannhäuser , the Meistersinger and the Ring of the NibelungenHe continued the Wagner Renaissance since the reopening of the opera house in the early 1990s. In 2001/2002 Niksa Bareza became GMD of the Oper Chemnitz and Chief Conductor of the Robert Schumann Philharmonic. Between 2007 and 2016, Frank Beermann, as General Music Director, focused his attention on CD productions, be it in the opera or concert area, repeatedly helping the orchestra achieve national attention and at prizes such as the ECHO Klassik. With the beginning of the 2017/2018 season Guillermo García Calvo takes over the position of General Music Director.
In recent years, such conductors as Mikhail Jurowski, Peter Eötvös, Peter Gülke, Stefan Blunier, Hermann Bäumer, Stefan Soltesz, Pedro Halffter and soloists such as Jan Vogler, Martin Stadtfeld, the GrauSchumacher Piano Duo, Matthias Kirschnereit, Jörg Widmann, Herbert Schuch, Veronika Eberle, Xavier de Maistre, Alban Gerhardt and the Ensemble Kolsimcha in Chemnitz.
The Robert Schumann Philharmonic is also a welcome partner of various concert promoters. Guest performances have taken the orchestra to New York, Venice, Thessaloniki, Rome, Salzburg, various Spanish concert halls, Tonhalle Zurich, Brucknerhaus Linz, Frankfurt, Dusseldorf, Cologne, Munich, Berlin, Dresden and the Festival Neuschwanstein Castle, the Schlossfestspiele Ludwigsburg and the Classic Summer Hamm. In addition to performances in opera, operetta, musical and ballet, the orchestra's tasks include the monthly symphony concerts as well as numerous other concerts in both symphonic and chamber music formations. The children and youth work in the program of the orchestra plays a special role.
