Peter A. Stadtmüller, b. 1930 in Heidenheim (Brenz), studied church music in Stuttgart under A. Nowakowski (organ), Johann Nepomuk David (music) and H. Grischkat (choral conducting). After the A-exam and the artistic maturity examination in organ he completed further studies with A. Heiller and Marie-Claire Alain (organ) and Kurt Thomas (choral conducting), also conducting 1957-59 (with Karl-Maria Zwissler and Hans Müller-Kray ) in Stuttgart, musicology 1959-61 (with Walter Gerstenberg, Hans Christian v. Dadelsen, Georg Reichert) in Tübingen.
In 1952 he was awarded 2nd prize at the ARD Competition in Munich. From 1970 to 1997 he was Professor at the Music Department of the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz and Head of the Department of Catholic Church Music.
