Francisco Escudero García of Goizueta , also known as the Master Escudero ( Zarauz , 13 of August of 1912 - San Sebastian , 7 of June of 2002 ) was a composer Spanish from the Basque Country .
He was born in Zarauz ( Guipúzcoa ), on August 13, 1912. He began his musical studies at the Municipal Academy of Music of San Sebastián with Beltrán Pagola , and continued in Madrid , where he was a student of Composition of Conrado del Campo . Scholarship by the Diputación de Guipúzcoa and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando , he moved to Paris , to pursue advanced courses with Paul Dukas and Paul Le Flem , and then in Munich as a student of Albert Wolf .
In 1937 he obtained the National Prize of Fine Arts for his work Trío bucólico . During the Spanish Civil War he moved to France, returning to Spain at the end of it.
In 1945 he moved to Bilbao , where he was appointed director of the Bilbao Choir and organized the Band. In 1947 he won the first Premio del Concurso Homage to Falla with his work Brushstrokes , a concert for piano and orchestra . In 1948 he moved again his residence to Zarauz , where he had spent his childhood, to obtain the Chair of Harmony and composition of the Conservatory of Music of San Sebastian , replacing his former teacher Beltrán Pagola. In 1957 he obtained the National Music Prize , at a time of his activity as a composer in which he is dedicated to symphonic poems : Arantzazu , Evocación en Itziar . In 1960 he created the Band City of San Sebastian. He composed the opera Zigor , Basque theme, which opens in Bilbao and then in Madrid and San Sebastian with great success, again obtaining a National Music Award.
Other of his most outstanding works are: Concert for cello and orchestra , Sinfonía sacra , Tonemas (for solo piano, composed by order of the Ministry of Culture to mark the birth of Joaquín Turina ), Geosymphonic Fantasy or the Gernika opera , commissioned by the Choral Society of Bilbao and premiered in 1987 during the commemorative events of the fiftieth anniversary of the bombing of Guernica.
In recent years they have premiered their works, among other groups, the Bilbao Symphony Orchestra and the Galicia Symphony Orchestra ; the Musical Fortnight Donostiarra has dedicated to this composer a special interest, debuting his works in the last editions.
At the moment the family of the composer is centered in the work of publishing the works previously not published, besides managing his legacy.
According to the specialized critic, the work of Escudero has enough elements to be considered one of the most valuable of the twentieth century . The little propitious cultural situation of Spain during years, as well as the lack of a classic musical culture of weight in the last section of the century, have prevented the greater diffusion of a music that in other European countries would enjoy a unanimous acceptance and impulse.
Within his teaching, he directed the Superior Municipal Conservatory of Music of San Sebastian . Under this period, in 1979 , it was when the historical conservatory of San Sebastian was granted the ability to teach the Higher Degree of music studies. His disciples are, among others, Javier Jacinto , José Luis Marco , Ramon Lazkano , Ángel Illarramendi , Alberto Iglesias and most of the teachers of the San Sebastian Conservatory as well as other musical centers in Spain.
He died on June 7, 2002. Posthumously and as a tribute, the City of San Sebastian gave its name to a city park. In 2004 the Conservatory of Music of San Sebastián changed its name, adopting the Francisco Escudero Conservatory.
