The orchestra of the Rome Opera House, founded in 1880 as a part of Teatro Costanzi (Costanzi Theater). In 1928 the theater was renamed to Teatro Reale dell’Opera di Roma (The Royal Opera House of Rome). With the fall of the monarchy the opera got its current name in 1946.
His heyday was during the 1930s and 1940s, when he had as artistic director Gino Marinuzzi and Tullio Serafin , and included in his troupe such singers, Beniamino Gigli , Giacomo Lauri-Volpi , Toti Dal Monte, Gina Cigna, Maria Caniglia , Ebe Stignani , etc.
In addition to its annual season, a summer festival was created at the Baths of Caracalla in 1937, by chef Oliviero de Fabritiis.
Its last renovation dates back to 1960, on the project of Marcello Piacentini who in 1926 had been responsible for the first renovation.
