Annette Maye (Born in 1974 in Flensburg ) is a German clarinetist and musicologist. She is mainly active in the fields of world music , jazz, free improvisation and new music.
Life and work :
After completing her studies in Eastern European History, Musicology and Eastern Slavic Studies at the University of Freiburg , Maye studied clarinet and bass clarinet with Claudio Puntin and Frank Gratkowski at the Cologne Conservatory . She also spent several months as an ERASMUS scholar at the Conservatoire Nationale Supérieur in Paris.
As a composer, she is particularly active for the German-Turkish trio ensemble FisFüz , whose co-founder and longtime clarinettist she is. Ensemble FisFüz received the SWR World Music Award and has released numerous CD albums. With the PyromanDuo with Laia Genc , whose debut CD received positive response from the German trade magazines in 2006, she worked together in the years 2004-2008. Played Moreover, with the Daniel Speer Trio , James Choice Orchestra and Banda Metafisica , the peeling Sick Brass Band and guests of the United Women's Orchestra , in whichAlexandra Naumann band and El Houssaine Kili .
Maye is the founder and member of the duo Doyna (Modern Klezmer) together with the Cologne jazz guitarist Martin Schulte. She plays Egyptian music of the composer Mohamed Abdel Wahab in the Tabadoul Orchestra . In ensemble FisFüz and her latest project Annette Maye's Vinograd Express , Annette Maye also works with the internationally established Italian clarinet virtuoso Gianluigi Trovesi. She has already recorded several CDs with him. She also played with Giora Feidman (Israel), Mohamed Mounir (Egypt), Michel Godard (France), Günter Sommer (Germany), Glen Velez and others(USA), the Tonkünstler-Orchester Niederösterreich and Noreum Machi (South Korea). In addition, she appears as a soloist. Through numerous concerts in Central and Eastern Europe, Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq, United Arab Emirates, Sudan, Japan, Taiwan and South Korea, the clarinetist is known to an international concert and festival audience. She participated in events as diverse as the WOMEX , the Taipei International Arts Festival , the Sofia Jazz Festival or the Ankara Jazz Festival. The Cologne-based musician participated in numerous radio productions. Especially with the internationally known world music formationSchäl Sick Brass Band and the "ensemble FisFüz" she appeared several times for the WDR , but also for the SWR and stations in Southeastern Europe, North Africa and East Asia. As a stage musician she was involved in various theater productions (eg at the Schauspiel Köln and the Festspielhaus St. Pölten).
Since 2013 she is the Artistic Director of the Multiphonics Festival , an international festival for creative clarinet music with a cross-disciplinary focus in jazz, world music, improvised and contemporary music.
Since 2001 Annette Maye teaches at the Open Jazzhausschule Köln. In addition, she also started in 2007 with musicological publication; her essay on "Eric Dolphy's Italian Heritage: The Bass Clarinet Game by jazz musician Gianluigi Trovesi " appeared in the musicological online magazine "Samples".
Maye was accepted as an artistic member in 2007 by GEDOK Cologne.
