François Couturier, born February 5, 1950 in Fleury-les-Aubrais (Loiret), is a French pianist, improviser and composer.
Biography :
After university studies (CAPES of musicology) and classical piano, he began a long collaboration with bassist Jean-Paul Céléa whom he met in 1978 in the quintet of drummer and composer Jacques Thollot.
First as a duo, then on many projects with Daniel Humair, François Jeanneau, Dominique Pifarély.
- 1981 - 1983: World Tours with John Mc Laughlin's band, "The Translators". Creation of the group "Passaggio" with Jean-Paul Céléa in 1986 (Armand Angster, Francoise Kübler, Wolfgang Reisinger).
He collaborates with François Jeanneau, Didier Levallet, Michel Portal and Larry Schneider.
- 1998: François Couturier plays duet with the violinist Dominique Pifarély, with whom he records "Poros" (ECM) and works on various creation around this duet (Michel Godard, Louis Sclavis, Francois Corneloup, Dominique Visse). With Jean-Marc Larché, he composed the opera Mozart and Amadeus on a libretto by Anthony Burgess and created the trio Music for a While.
- 2001: Member of the trio of Anouar Brahem "The step of the black cat" then "The Journey of Sahar" (2 Cd ECM and world tours).
- 2005: He recorded "Nostalghia, Song for Tarkovski" for ECM with Anja Lechner, Jean Louis Matinier and Jean Marc Larché. Since then, this quartet has performed on the biggest European stages (Paris, Dublin, Prague, Athens, Florence, Munich, Lucerne, Bergamo, Florence ...) He composes the music of the film Mom is crazy about Jean Pierre Ameris.
- 2008: Solo recording, in September, in Lugano the album Un jour si blanc, released at ECM in February 2010.
2009: Homage to Federico Mompou in trio with F. Mechali and F. Laizeau at Zigzag Records.
- 2011 He creates the album Tarkovsky Quartet and Time sealed with the son of the filmmaker Andrej Tarkovsky, then composes the music of the film Io sono Li of the Italian director Andrea Segre.
2012-2015: Recordings for Ecm and European tours of two new projects: - "Il Pergolèse" A tribute to Pergolese (in quartet with singer Maria Pia of Vito, Anja Lechner - "Moderato Cantabile" Duet with cellist Anja Lechner. the music from the film "City of dreams" by director Steve Faigenbaum Participates in Anouar Brahem's new project "Souvenir" Cd Ecm and world tour.
