Jukka Perko is a Finnish saxophonist who plays in a variety of contexts, playing in great classical orchestras as well as sharing the stage with jazz monsters like McCoy Tyner or Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen. With Jarmo Saari and Teemu Viinikainen, two fellow guitarists, he forms the Avara trio, of which ACT publishes the first album.
The bias is that of a refined music where the guitars (electric and acoustic) remain almost constantly in withdrawal to leave the saxophone the care of the interpretation of the themes and the solos. Invisible Man is a record that has a hard time convincing us of the relevance of this choice. Mostly composed of compositions of three musicians who, pleasant as they are, do not favor the involvement of the listener, the repertoire is tainted by three faults that seriously affect the quality of the project. These are three times, one by Eric Clapton ("Tears In Heaven"), one by Peter Gabriel ("Do not Give up") and one by Gabriel Fauré ("Pavane") whose interpretation, although too smooth, erase the attractions.
It is all the more unfortunate that certain passages let us imagine what this music could have to offer, such as interwoven lyric phrasing on "Open Door" or the refined melody of "Sweet Solitude".
