Eric Lugosch is an American acoustic guitarist, composer, singer, and music educator recognized as an accomplished figure in traditional and contemporary fingerstyle guitar. His music combines ragtime, blues, folk, swing, and jazz with sophisticated melodic arrangements. His playing is particularly distinguished by syncopated rhythms, independent bass lines, and his ability to make the acoustic guitar sound like a small orchestra.
Lugosch grew up in Philadelphia and gained his first musical experience with the Philadelphia Boys Choir. Through his older brother's record collection, he discovered jazz and the music of American fingerpicking pioneers such as Mississippi John Hurt and Reverend Gary Davis. These influences formed the foundation of his distinctive guitar style.
He achieved his international breakthrough in 1984 when he won the National Fingerpicking Championship at the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, Kansas. This achievement established his reputation as an outstanding fingerstyle guitarist and opened up new opportunities for concert performances and recordings.
His notable releases include Strike (1985), Making Models (1994), Black Key Blues (1997), Kind Heroes (1999), and New Tradition (2004). His collaboration with German guitarist and producer Peter Finger, as well as Finger's label Acoustic Music Records, contributed significantly to his recognition in Europe. With REVision (2008), Lugosch paid tribute to blues guitarist Reverend Gary Davis. His album Migration (2024) combines original compositions with influences from ragtime, blues, and jazz.
Alongside his performing career, Lugosch taught guitar for more than 25 years at Chicago's renowned Old Town School of Folk Music. He also developed the Fingerstyle Academy, published instructional materials, and contributed articles to specialist magazines such as Acoustic Guitar and Fingerstyle Guitar. Throughout his international concert and festival appearances, he has shared the stage with artists including Doc Watson, Taj Mahal, John Prine, and David Bromberg.
Eric Lugosch is an important interpreter and innovator of the American fingerstyle tradition. His music combines the rhythmic vitality of ragtime and blues with jazz-influenced harmonies and original compositions. As both a guitarist and an educator, he has made a significant contribution to the development and preservation of acoustic guitar music.
