Peter Sjostedt and Bob Kiah had previously performed in a Los Angeles band called Head. Joining with Boston native Dennis McCarthy, they formed the Ape Hangers. They recorded a demo tape for Sony and, when that label passed, were signed by A&M to do a full album. That album became Ultrasounds, which spawned the single "You Don't Know What It Takes". It was the inclusion of another song from the album, "I Don't Live Today", on the soundtrack to the movie Empire Records, that brought attention their way. Unfortunately, as they prepared to go on their first major tour, A&M dropped them as part of the year-end budget cuts.
The band relocated to Boston in 1996, performing under the name 3XL, and released a second, self-titled independent release in 1998, again using the name Ape Hangers.
