Cymande (pronounced si-MAHN-deh) is a pioneering British funk band formed in London in 1971 by Caribbean-born musicians Steve Scipio and Patrick Patterson. They forged a unique sound they called “Nyah-Rock,” blending funk, reggae, jazz, soul, calypso, and African rhythms into a hypnotic and spiritual groove. Their early 1970s output produced four albums and singles like “The Message,” which found success in the U.S., even as the band remained largely underappreciated in their home country.
Over time, Cymande’s music found a second life. Hip-hop producers in the 1980s and 1990s embraced their deep grooves and meditative rhythms, sampling them in tracks by De La Soul, The Fugees, and Wu‑Tang Clan. This revival cemented their influence, highlighting how their fusion of styles was decades ahead of its time and resonated far beyond the funk scene.
In 2025, Cymande released Renascence, their first new album in ten years. It continues their tradition of warm, rhythmic funk while introducing modern production and collaborations, including the soulful “Only One Way” featuring Celeste. Tracks like “Chasing an Empty Dream” and “Road to Zion” showcase a band still able to craft music that feels both timeless and immediate.
Live, Cymande is an experience rooted in rhythm and energy. Their concerts feature hypnotic basslines, rich horn sections, and layered percussion that build into trance-like grooves, creating performances that feel communal and uplifting. Even after more than five decades, Cymande remains a living bridge between classic funk and contemporary soul, continuing to inspire listeners and new generations of musicians around the world.
