Artist Biography

Russell Watson, born in Salford, Lancashire, England, on November 24, 1966, is an English tenor who has released several popular albums of opera-style songs. During his nine-year career, he has released four singles, five albums, and another was planned for November 2006 but was postponed to 2007 due to the removal of a benign brain tumor. His first album, entitled The Voice, was released in May 2001. A mix of opera arias and pop song covers, it topped the classical music charts in the UK and eventually reached number five on the UK album charts. Later, upon its release in the US, the album topped the sales charts and made history as the first album by a British artist to reach number one on the classical charts in both the US and the UK. The album featured a duet with Cleo, from the girl group Cleopatra (group), on the song "Someone like You." Cleo also sang a duet with Russell on his third album, Reprise, on the song "The Best That Love Can Be." Before Velvet Revolver was formed, Slash (former Guns n' Roses guitarist and current Velvet Revolver member) asked Russell Watson if he wanted to be their singer, but Watson declined, wishing to pursue his solo career, at least for the time being. Also in 2001, Watson sang the theme song for Star Trek: Enterprise."Where My Heart Will Take Me" (written by Diane Warren), originally performed by Rod Stewart for Patch Adams. The song was remixed in 2003 to make it more upbeat. Watson also sang it live at the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games in England in 2002. At the end of 2002, he released the single "Nothing Sacred - A Song For Kirsty" to raise funds for the Francis House children's hospice in Didsbury, Manchester. Their campaign to raise £5 million was led by Kirsty Howard, a seven-year-old girl with a serious heart defect. The song reached number 17 in the UK singles chart. Watson won the Album of the Year award at the Classical Brit Awards in 2001 and 2002, as well as Best Debut Album (2001) and Best Album (2002). He recently played the role of Pastor Nathaniel in the stage adaptation of Jeff Wayne's musical The War of the Worlds, which toured the UK in early 2006. Watson's most unusual collaboration to date is undoubtedly with former Happy Mondays singer Shaun Ryder on Watson's debut album, The Voice. Ryder lends his voice to Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Caballé's song "Barcelona."
