Mahito Yokota (横田真人) is a Japanese composer and orchestrator of video game music who has worked for Nintendo since 2003. He is best known for directing the composition of the score for Donkey Kong: Jungle Beat and for his collaborations with fellow Nintendo composer Koji Kondo on the soundtracks of Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario 3D World.
Born on April 13, 1974, in Japan, Yokota began his career as an audio director at Koei before joining Nintendo in 2003.
During the development of Super Mario Galaxy, Yokota, who was responsible for the game's music, initially pursued a Latin-influenced sound in keeping with the Latin percussion instruments, such as steelpans, bongos and congas, used in earlier Mario titles. He completed 28 tracks in this style, combining Latin instrumentation with synthesized sci-fi textures for the game's main theme. Although the piece was approved by game designer Yoshiaki Koizumi, Koji Kondo rejected it. Three months later, Yokota presented Shigeru Miyamoto with three alternative styles—an orchestral piece, a blend of orchestral and pop music, and a pure pop composition. Miyamoto selected the orchestral piece, written by Kondo, setting the direction for the rest of the game's symphonic score. Super Mario Galaxy received widespread critical acclaim and was named the best video game of 2007 by numerous gaming outlets.
