Misanthrop is the stage name of Michael Bräuninger, a drum and bass producer and DJ from Hamburg, Germany. Drawn to the dark sounds and menacing beats of drum and bass in the early 1990s, he began producing his own tracks under the Misanthrop moniker, specializing in the neurofunk subgenre. His early influences included artists like Position Chrome and Alec Empire, which helped shape his trademark sound combining technical production skills with musical intuition and an uncompromising approach to sonic experimentation.
Misanthrop is one half of the collaborative project Neosignal and co-owner of Neosignal Recordings alongside fellow producer Phace. The label, founded in 2009, has become one of Germany's leading independent electronic music imprints for futuristic drum and bass, halftime, and broken beat music. His collaborative album with Phace, From Deep Space, was released in 2010, and he later released his solo LP Analog in November 2019 via Neosignal, showcasing his use of hardware synthesizers and drum machines. Throughout his career spanning over a decade, Misanthrop has released numerous singles and EPs, collaborated with artists across the drum and bass spectrum, and established himself as a respected figure in the neurofunk scene through his meticulous production work and innovative sound design.
