Gravel Town finds its origin back in 2007 when the four original band members, Hans Glerum, Niels Vloemans, Martijn Ebben & Michel Ebben, were invited to perform at Benátská Noc, one of the biggest music festivals in the Czech Republic. A great opportunity for the band members to start their journey. Michel, as a singer-songwriter, had quite a few songs lying around that sounded if they were just written for Gravel Town. In the winter of 2007 they started rehearsing.
The gig was a great success so they returned in 2008, calling themselves 'The Plastic Shark Project', taken from the plastic 'great white shark' Michel had on the dining table at his house, during their first band meeting.
In 2012 Hans, Martijn & Michel, along with Mark Lubeek, the new drummer, decided it was time to record an album. They met at Martijn's place, selected the songs and chose a new band name, Gravel Town was born! Hans and Mark were enthusiastic about a studio they knew in the small, rural town of Harcigny, located in the Picardie region in the Northern part of France. A farm house, no central heating but just a wooden stove and no surrounding neighbors who could care for loud music. An old cat named Sansy, a lot of cows and sheep, an old WWI cemetery and an ancient run down typical French café straight from the 50’s, where Marilyn Monroe was still in her prime. The perfect place for Gravel Town to set up and record an album.
en songs were recorded in a week. Electric guitars, bass guitar, drums and guide vocals were done at Harcigny Studios at the end of March 2013. During the rest of 2013 and the first part of 2014 extra acoustic & electric guitars were recorded by Hans at Michel's Tempting Tunes Studios in Rotterdam. Michel added extra instruments like acoustic & electric guitars, lapsteel guitar, mandolin, banjo, accordion, organ, piano and percussion. As a finishing touch; backing vocals were sung by Bregje Sanne Lacourt, Demet Köysüren & Marinka Stam.
The album was mixed during spring 2014 by Michel and mastered by Tammo Kersbergen.
From Grace is a collection of nine songs written by Mark and Michel and one song from John Hiatt, who has been an inspiration for the band. The album is released by FYIFY! Records & Publishing.
