Bertine Zetlitz (born 1975) is one of Norwegian pop’s most distinctive voices, from Frogner in Oslo. She began writing songs at twelve, became a presenter on NRK’s Midt i Smørøyet at thirteen, and signed a record deal with EMI in 1996. Her debut album Morbid Latenight Show (1998) earned her two Spellemann Awards — for Newcomer of the Year and Best Pop Soloist — and the single “Abigail” became an instant radio favourite. With the second album Beautiful So Far (2000), produced by Tore Johansson (The Cardigans), and the major hit “Adore Me”, she cemented her position as one of the country’s leading pop artists. In the summer of 2000 she played the North American touring festival Lilith Fair alongside Sheryl Crow, Suzanne Vega and Chrissie Hynde. The albums Sweet Injections (2003), Rollerskating (2004) and My Italian Greyhound (2006) followed — produced by the likes of Howie B, Richard X and Fred Ball — and in 2004 she was Norway’s best-selling artist. She has won four Spellemann Awards in total.
Musically, Zetlitz has always moved in the space between pop, electronica and something darker and more textural. From the debut, where jazz musicians Bugge Wesseltoft and Arild Andersen contributed, via the Swedish indie pop expression of Beautiful So Far, to the danceable electro pop of Rollerskating and Electric Feet (2012) — she has rarely done the same thing twice. AllMusic describes her as known for “literate, ruminative, dance-oriented electronic pop”. After a lengthy hiatus, the long-awaited comeback album La oss snakke om været is now arriving, her first solo studio album since 2015. The album deals with relationships — the lasting and the fleeting — and Zetlitz herself has said the songs try to enter the fragile, often invisible sides of human connection.
Live, Bertine Zetlitz is an artist with a stage presence matched by few. She has always had an eye for the visual — the outfits, the staging, the attitude — and a voice that carries equally well in an intimate setting as in front of tens of thousands. That she is now back with new material after years in the background makes this a rare opportunity to experience one of Norwegian pop’s most complete artists on stage again.
