Crippled Black Phoenix formed in 2004, built around multi-instrumentalist Justin Greaves, formerly of doom and sludge outfits Iron Monkey and Electric Wizard, who was encouraged to develop his own material by Mogwai bassist Dominic Aitchison. What began as a loose, unorthodox project among musicians busy with other bands grew into one of the most distinctive collectives in British underground rock, drawing members over the years from acts including Gonga, Esoteric, and Mogwai itself.

The band's debut, A Love of Shared Disasters, arrived in 2006 on Invada Records, the label run by Portishead's Geoff Barrow, who produced the album and occasionally joined the band on stage in its early years. From there, Crippled Black Phoenix developed a sound that resists easy categorization: dark, sprawling, and cinematic, pulling together post-rock, progressive rock, doom, folk, and ambient textures into what the band has called "endtime ballads." Albums like The Resurrectionists, Night Raider, and I, Vigilante leaned into slow-building, atmospheric arrangements, while later records such as Bronze and Ellengæst pushed toward heavier dynamics and sharper emotional weight, often exploring themes of death, memory, and historical trauma.

Live, the band is known for large, shifting lineups, sometimes numbering close to a dozen musicians on stage, and for incorporating folk and Victorian-era instruments alongside conventional rock setups. With Greaves as the only constant across nearly thirty contributing members, Crippled Black Phoenix has spent two decades treating instability as a creative strength rather than a limitation, releasing over a dozen full-length albums along the way, including 2024's 20th-anniversary retrospective, The Wolf Changes Its Fur But Not Its Nature.
