AWOL One is one of the most unique voices in hip-hop music today, and along with his group the Shape Shifters, has earned his place as an icon of LA underground rap. Equally venerable is producer Daddy Kev, whose work with Busdriver, The Grouch and Freestyle Fellowship, among countless others, has established him as one of the most respected producers in the West. Since early 2001, the AWOL One & Daddy Kev franchise has resulted in three critically acclaimed albums and a devoted fanbase that spans the globe. It’s now 2005, and the terrible twosome are back-to-basics with their first EP-length adventure, Killafornia. Joined once again by longtime collaborator and master scratch composer D-Styles, AWOL and Kev deliver a five song EP of West Coast anthems, destined to be blaring from boom boxes all Summer long.
The story of AWOL One & Daddy Kev began with 2001’s brilliant Souldoubt, a certified LA underground hip-hop classic, deemed “album of the year” in Vice and “one of the year’s best albums” in the LA Weekly. The audio assault continued with Number 3 On The Phone in 2002, a limited edition CD and vinyl pressing that further cemented their stellar reputation, and somehow earned the duo a nomination for Hip-Hop Album of the Year at the 2002 California Music Awards. Then came Slanguage, released by Mush Records in 2003.
