Envy was formed in Tokyo in 1992 and has since become one of the most influential groups within screamo, post‑hardcore, and atmospheric post‑rock. Their distinctive sound – an emotional blend of intense hardcore energy and sweeping melodic landscapes – has made them a cornerstone of Japan’s alternative music scene.
Across eight studio albums, Envy has continuously evolved, perfecting the balance between tension and release with layers of distorted guitars, clean vocal passages, spoken word, and orchestral textures. Albums like All The Footprints You’ve Ever Left… (2001) and A Dead Sinking Story (2003) expanded the band’s musical expression, while Insomniac Doze (2006) and Recitation (2010) pushed them further into epic, atmospheric soundscapes.
Their latest album, Eunoia (2024), presents a mature Envy: intense yet spacious, deeply emotional yet controlled. The album weaves together quiet guitar motifs and ambient electronics with sudden bursts of post‑hardcore energy. The result is a compact and powerful record that balances heartbreak and hope, and stands as one of their most impactful works.
Live, Envy remain a force to be reckoned with. On their 2025 European tour, which includes Øya Festival in Oslo, they translate their studio sound into a performance that is tight, cathartic, and hypnotic. The band’s ability to combine chaos and stillness – turning raw emotional energy into cinematic arcs – has inspired countless artists.
