Tra i più grandi esponenti del glam rock negli anni settanta, furono fonte di ispirazione per molti gruppi successivi. Fu una band molto popolare nel Regno Unito negli anni '70, nel corso dei quali piazzò numerosi singoli in vetta alla UK Singles Chart.

Sono noti soprattutto per le canzoni Merry Xmas Everybody e Cum on Feel the Noize del 1973
