Artist BiographyAvailable in:

Taio Cruz from London, born Adetayo Ayowale Onile-Ere, started writing music at the age of twelve – with a Nigerian father and Brazilian mother. He taught himself piano by ear, and it was only a matter of time before his talent was discovered: a Def Jam A&R overheard one of his demos playing in the background during a phone call, and shortly after, the young Cruz was flown to Atlanta to work with some of pop music’s biggest producers.
Before stepping into the spotlight himself, he broke through as a songwriter – winning a Brit Award in 2005 for co-writing Will Young’s single “Your Game.” His debut album Departure (2008), which he wrote, arranged, and produced entirely himself, was certified gold in the UK and nominated at the MOBO Awards. But it was the follow-up Rokstarr (2009) that changed everything. The single “Break Your Heart” topped the charts in both the UK and the US, where it set a record by jumping from number 53 directly to number one on the Billboard Hot 100.
Then came “Dynamite” – co-written with Max Martin and produced by Dr. Luke – which topped charts in half a dozen countries and earned Cruz three Billboard Awards. A wave of collaborations with some of the decade’s biggest names followed: “Higher” with Kylie Minogue, “Little Bad Girl” with David Guetta and Ludacris, and “Dirty Picture” with Kesha. He also penned Jennifer Lopez’s “I’m Into You” and David Guetta’s “Without You” featuring Usher, establishing himself as one of the most sought-after triple threats in pop music – artist, songwriter, and producer all in one.
Musically, Cruz sits at the crossroads of danceable electropop, R&B, and pure hit-driven pop. His productions are sleek and high-energy, built for big arenas and dance floors, while his voice – warm and agile – gives the songs a personal touch amid all the grandeur. Cruz is one of those rare artists who has shaped the sound of an entire era from both sides of the mixing desk.
