Adrian Claudiu Sînă started the group in 1999. At the time, it consisted of him and his female counterpart, Ramona Barta.
Their debut Romanian album În culori was released in Romania on 10 January 2002; it included the single "Ţi-am promis".
Akcent's English debut album French Kiss with Kylie was released in Europe on 23 August 2006, and it included their two European hit singles, "Kylie" and "Jokero". Their song "French Kiss" (the English version of "9 mai") is a cover of "[[Extemporal ned. However, in September 2009 after 18 months, Ulici left the band to dedicate his time to his acting career.
In 2008, Adrian Sînă was signed to produce Akcent's album Fără lacrimi ("No Tears"). The international music hits "That's My Name", "Stay With Me" and "Lover's Cry" were all under Adrian Sina.
In 2009, Adrian Sina produced “True Believers”, one of Akcent's most successful albums. On the CD were also included the international hits "That’s My Name," "Stay With Me," "Lover's Cry," and "Tears." Because of the success of “That’s My Name," the song was released in the United States through Ultra Records. Because of “True Believers”, the band started performing worldwide. In 2010 Akcent made a video for the single “Love Stoned” in the Saharan Desert.
In 2011 Akcent released “My Passion." Akcent signed a contract with Robbins Ent in the United States and in May 2012 “My Passion” was officially released in the United States. Then came the song "Feelings on Fire" which featured Ruxandra Bar and which had a race car video shooted in Romania, on Transfagarasan.
2012 was a busy and successful year for Akcent. In January, Akcent released another single in collaboration with Sandra N, “I’m Sorry.”
In the summer of 2012, Akcent released the single “Chimie Intre Noi”, produced by Adrian Sina.
In September 2012, Akcent embarked on an American tour, performing in New York and Chicago.
