Album DescriptionAvailable in:
This is a very rewarding two-CD sampler that introduces listeners to a wide variety of singers who were active in the 1930s, ranging from jazz vocalists (Annette Hanshaw, Ethel Waters, Connie Boswell, the Boswell Sisters, Lee Wiley, Helen Ward, Ella Logan, Maxine Sullivan and Mildred Bailey) to cabaret and pop artists of the time (Ruth Etting, Helen Morgan, Greta Keller, Frances Langford, Alice Faye, Nan Wynn and Ginny Simms). This set has more than its share of rarities (including some previously unissued alternate takes) and there are many rewarding performances. The set is recommended to anyone with an interest in the singing stylists who rose to prominence between Bessie Smith and Billie Holiday.
