While the first volume of Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass' Greatest Hits focuses on the very well-known numbers like the theme from "The Happening" and the like, it's this second volume that proves far more interesting. The reason is in the more jazz oriented approach of the group, and the more textured and nuanced production. There are tunes here, like a tight, nifty little version of Nat Adderley's "Work Song," a lush but still biting "My Favorite Things," "What Now My Love," and "Brasilia." Of course, Alpert's smash reading of Burt Bacharach's "This Guy's in Love with You" is here to boot. What it makes for is a thoroughly enjoyable album with fine arrangements and diverse tunes.
