Though the title suggests that the record was recorded live, it consists of a studio recreation of a Carnegie Hall performance on one disc and a second disc that is identical to an LP released separately as The Best of Jimmy Reed.
Reed's recordings of "Bright Lights, Big City" and "Big Boss Man" were voted two of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll.
