The River ist ein Doppelalbum, das Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band 1980 unter Columbia Records veröffentlicht haben. Es erreichte in Deutschland Platz 31, Platz zwei in Großbritannien und als sein erstes Album Platz eins in den Charts der USA.
Das Album enthält Titel, die beim vorherigen Album Darkness on the Edge of Town nicht berücksichtigt wurden (Independence Day, Point Blank, The Ties That Bind, Ramrod und Sherry Darling).
Neben Titeln, die Probleme der Arbeiterklasse in den 70er-Jahren des vorigen Jahrhunderts thematisieren (“I got a job working construction for the Johnstown Company; But lately there ain’t been much work on account of the economy; Now all them things that seemed so important; Well mister they vanished right into the air” - „Ich bekam einen Job in der Johnstown Company, aber schließlich gab es nicht mehr viel Arbeit wegen der Wirtschaft und alle Dinge, die wichtig waren, lösten sich in Luft auf“ - aus The River), gibt es auch Songs, die leicht und manchmal humorvoll sind (“Now don’t you call James Bond or Secret Agent Man Cause they can’t do it, like I can I’m a rocker, baby” - „Nenn mich nicht James Bond oder Geheimagent, denn die können es nicht so wie ich es kann, ich bin ein Rocker“ - aus I’m a rocker).

Vom Rolling Stone Magazine wurde das Album in die Liste der 100 besten Alben der Achtizger auf Platz 86 aufgenommen (1989). 2003 setzte das Magazin das Album auf Platz 250 der 500 besten Alben aller Zeiten. In den Billboard Top 200 erreichte das Album Platz 1. Die aus dem Album ausgekoppelte Single Hungry Heart wurde Springsteens erster Top 10-Hit in den amerikanischen Singlecharts, wo sie Platz 5 erreichte. Von The River wurden alleine in den USA 1,5 Millionen Alben verkauft.
Der Song Point Blank erhielt den Titel nach einem Film aus dem Jahr 1967 mit Lee Marvin in der Hauptrolle. Drive All Night und Stolen Car spielten eine wichtige Rolle im Soundtrack des Filmes Cop Land (1997). Drive All Night und Out In The Street sind zudem Teil des Soundtracks des Films Die Liebe in mir (2007), in dem auch das Album selbst mehrere Male erwähnt wird.
Im Jahr 2010 erschien The River mit sechs weiteren Alben Springsteens auf dem CD-Box-Set The Collection 1973 – 84.

Throughout the 1970's Bruce Springsteen developed a significant following due to his earthy mid-tempo rock that often focused on the plights of the working class. He was one of the few gifted artists that could create rock that was lively and thoughtful, capable of spreading political or societal messages without coming off as preachy or holier-than-thou.
As good as Springsteen was during the 70's, it was during the 80's when he perfected his formula and forever sealed his reputation as one of rock's greatest performers. In fact he is still actively releasing albums and performing 30 years after his debut album in 1973 – a feat nearly unrivaled in the music world.
The River was Springsteen's first 80's masterpiece, a gigantic double-album that featured a whopping twenty tracks. Often the idea of a double-album is better than the actual reality; artists often run out of inspiration when composing so many tracks for one work that filler material becomes inevitable. While some of the tracks work better than others on The River, all contain that Springsteen flair that make them wholly enjoyable.
Some of the highlights of this double album are:
Hungry Heart – One of the Boss' greatest and most identifiable hits ever. This anthemic song was the first of his significantly "commercial" tracks and as such enjoyed plenty of airplay on the radios.
Independence Day – A heartfelt ballad concerning a father and son that demonstrated Springsteen's versatility when compared with the exuberant Hungry Heart.
I Wanna Marry You – This isn't one of Springsteen's better-known songs, but it's a fun little pop-rocker that provides a nice contrast to his more thought-provoking faire.
What impressed me most about this double-album is the sheer diversity offered throughout. Lighthearted pop-rockers, ballads, songs with societal messages… you'll find it all on The River, one of the Boss' best albums ever. Make sure you give this highly recommended and timeless album a listen if you haven't experienced its rock bliss already.
