Metallica (aussi connu sous le nom de Black Album étant donné sa couverture) est le cinquième album studio du groupe de heavy metal Metallica sorti le 13 août 1991.

L'album Metallica sort en 1991. Avec sa pochette presque entièrement noire, il devient rapidement surnommé le Black Album tant par les fans que les membres du groupe. Cet album est à l'heure actuelle le plus grand succès commercial du groupe, avec plus de 30 millions d'exemplaires vendus à travers le monde.

L'album marque une évolution importante dans le style du groupe. Les tempos sont plus lents, les morceaux sont plus courts et leurs structures beaucoup plus simples, aspirant ainsi à du simple rock. C'est principalement un album de heavy metal, et il n'y a plus beaucoup de traces de thrash metal. Par son côté plus « commercial » que les précédents albums du groupe, qui a déplu à un certain nombre de fans de la première heure, il lui a permis d'atteindre un plus large public. C'est aussi le premier album du groupe produit par Bob Rock qui restera leur producteur jusqu'à St. Anger. Comme dans ...And Justice for All, Jason Newsted ne collabore qu'à un seul titre dans l'écriture des chansons.

Les titres les plus connus sont Enter Sandman, Sad but True, The Unforgiven, Nothing Else Matters, Wherever I May roam (tous sortis en single).

Malgré son côté plus accessible, l'album Metallica reste une production respectée dans le milieu du heavy metal. On note par ailleurs l'importance croissante que prennent les ballades ou power ballads pour Metallica (Nothing Else Matters, The Unforgiven, deux ballades très connues).

Jason Newsted utilisera pour la première fois dans un album de Metallica une basse 12 cordes, dans Wherever I May Roam. Enter Sandman fut notamment composé par Lars Ulrich, en élaborant sur un premier riff que Kirk Hammett ait composé à 3h15 du matin.

James Hetfield nous informe dans le documentaire "Classic Albums : Metallica" (2002), que la plupart des chansons partaient d'un simple riff, qui fut exploité et poussé jusqu'au maximum.

Certaines personnes diront que : "cet album est heavy sans être thrash, donc mesuré mais puissant" (David Fricke :éditeur du magazine Rolling Stone). D'autres diront qu'avec cet album Metallica devient "Le Led Zeppelin d'une génération" (Cliff Burnstein : Co-Manageur). Les paroles de cet album sont souvent plus personnelles que celles des albums précédents. The God That Failed en est l'exemple le plus concret, parlant de la secte religieuse dans laquelle ses parents étaient embrigadés.

Any attempt to move away from a tried and tested formula is often met with resistance by some fans who never want their idols to change. Smarter than your average heavy metal band, the more complex turn-on-a dime twists of their previous albums, Master Of Puppets and 1989’s And Justice For All, were trimmed back in favour of a more honed-down delivery.

Though the band didn’t always see eye to eye with Bob Rock (who had previously cut his teeth engineering for the likes of Bon Jovi before producing Motley Crue’s Dr.Feelgood), the tensions between the two camps resulted in an album bursting at the seams with alternative ideas.

Sure enough, accusations that they had sold out came from the rump of hardcore fans within seconds of their fifth album being released in 1991. Several years later thousands of fans signed an online petition calling on the band to sever its links with Bob Rock such was their conviction that their beloved Metallica had strayed from the straight and narrow.

Yet his involvement gained them mass sales (number one on both sides of the Atlantic) and earned them the Grammy they’d missed out on, having lost out to Jethro Tull’s Catfish Rising the previous year. With millions of new fans going on to discover their back catalogue, Metallica moved from cult metal gods to bona fide rock stars, straddling the airwaves with the psycho-dramatics of “Enter Sandman”, whose terse motifs served notice that things were changing.

The spaghetti western set dressing of “The Unforgiven”, “Nothing Else Matters” with its sensitive lyrics and string section embellishments, as well as the widescreen dynamics of “My Friend Of Misery” demonstrated how keen they were to move things on. In “The God That Failed”, vocalist, rhythm guitarist and principle writer, James Hetfield deals unflinchingly with parental loss and the contradictions of faith in a mature and considered manner.

The confidence exuding from almost every track isn’t due to a clichéd, puffed-up HM swagger but a result of literate and articulate artists breaking free of generic expectation.
