Taking Chances is the tenth English language studio album by Canadian singer Céline Dion, released on November 7, 2007 on CD and CD/DVD. It is her 13th English album and 36th in total. The album was released physically worldwide during the month of November 2007 in CD edition. The album was also released digitally on iTunes. The collector's edition which includes CD, DVD and perfume in special package, was released in December 2007 in North America and February 2008 in Europe. On April 21, 2008, a new deluxe version was digitally released in Europe (except France), containing "Immensité, "Map to My Heart" and "Taking Chances (I-Soul extended remix)" as bonus tracks. Upon its release, the album received mixed to average reviews from most music critics, based on an aggregate score of 53/100 from Metacritic.
Céline Dion worked with many different producers for this album, mainly on pop, rock and R&B inspired records. The tracks were recorded mostly during Dion's summer holiday, between July 2 and August 15, 2007. At the Juno Awards of 2008 Dion was nominated in categories: Artist of the Year, Album of the Year, Pop Album of the Year and Fan Choice Award. The next year, at the Juno Awards of 2009 her song "Taking Chances" was nominated as a Single of the Year and again she was nominated in category Fan Choice Award.
Four singles were released from the album as part of its promotion process. Céline Dion covered "Taking Chances" as the lead single from the album. The song was nominated for the "Single of the Year" at the Juno Awards of 2009. It was also voted one of the top 20 pop songs of 2007 by About.com. As of October 28, 2010, the digital single has sold 462,000 copies in total in the U.S. and peaked at number 54 on the Billboard Hot 100. "Eyes on Me" is the second single from the album, released in the United Kingdom on January 7, 2008. The critics heavily compared the track to Shakira's songs. "A World to Believe In" is the third single (second in Japan) from the album. It was commercially released on "Ultimate Box", which includes 2 CDs and 3 DVDs.The single debuted at number 8 on the Japanese Oricon Singles Chart with 11,778 copies sold. Céline Dion covered "Alone" for the album, it was released as the fourth single of the album. The song debuted in November 2007 at number 85 on the UK Singles Chart. After selling 12,535 copies, it entered the U.S. Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles at number 24 and Canadian Hot 100 at number 57. Officially "Alone" debuted on radio in Sweden in December 2007. The next month it entered the Swedish Singles Chart, due to strong digital sales, and peaked at number 52.
In October and November 2007, Céline Dion started promoting Taking Chances in Europe (United Kingdom, France, Italy and Germany) and United States. To promote the album, Celine embarked on her "Taking Chances Tour". It was the eleventh worldwide concert tour by Céline Dion. The tour marked the return of Dion after performing her groundbreaking show A New Day... in Las Vegas for five years. The tour visited Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe and North America. It is estimated to have grossed US$236.6 million in 2008, so it became one the highest grossing tours in 2008. In 2009, it grossed an additional US$42.6 million, bringing its total gross to US$279.2 million. "Taking Chances Tour" is the second highest-grossing tour of all-time by a solo artist, and tenth highest-grossing tour over all.

She gets a rough ride, does old Celine. Mention her name to most people and they’ll make some rude comment about her appearance or curl up their lip in disgust at the thought of her music. Yet the fact that Taking Chances is her 34th album speaks for itself. You can knock her as much as you like, but you can’t keep her down.
That’s partially because she’s had the good sense to base herself in Vegas for three years, where they don’t care about fashions or trends, just about success and the ability to put on a sumptuous and over-the-top show… and no-one can deny such things of Celine.
Singers need more than the spotlight though, and even ones who have sold over 200 million albums still want to feel like they have something to offer. So she’s left the lights of Vegas behind, stepped back into the real world and in fairness to her, brought along a clutch of songs that actually may change a few people’s opinion.
In the UK, she’s still best known for her mid-90s power ballads, for moments like "Think Twice" and the interminable "My Heart Will Go On", and while she’s hardly jumped ship and sailed off into weird waters, she has pulled her neck in a bit and sprinkled more subtlety into her songs.
That may be down to her choice of collaborators. Amongst the list of luminaries who twiddle a knob, knock out a lyric or strum a guitar for her are the all-conquering Timbaland, king of R’n’B balladry R Kelly, ex-Evanescence axe wielder Ben Moody, Christina Aguilera and Pink co-writer Linda Perry… and the always entertaining Dave Stewart, whose influence stretches so far that there’s even a lyrical snip of The Eurythemics’ "Here Comes The Rain Again" woven into the title track.
The highlights are two very different songs. In the power ballad corner, she shows off her larynx with a belting take on Heart’s endless queen of soft rock, "Alone". Up against it for the title is the more contemporary "Shadow Of Love", a song with enough disco and fun for Kylie to sing it.
Taking Chances doesn’t quite do what the title suggests, but it does push Celine Dion to the edge of her comfort zone and show an artist who not only wants to remain relevant but is prepared to work hard to stay that way.
