#3 is the third album released by British pop music act Shakespears Sister. Following the release and subsequent success of the duo's prior album Hormonally Yours, band member Marcella Detroit left the act. Thus #3 is technically a solo record by remaining member Siobhan Fahey, much in the way that the act first started.
Co-written by Fahey, her then-husband David A. Stewart and members of Fahey's new backing band, #3 was produced by Fahey, Stewart, Hormonally Yours-producer Alan Moulder, Andy Wright and Flood throughout 1995, 1996 and 1997. The musical style of #3 ventured away from the polished pop of Sacred Heart and Hormonally Yours and featured a more lo-fi and rock music feel.
The album's initial single, The Beatlesque "I Can Drive", charted at number thirty on the UK Singles Chart and was considered a disappointment by London Records, who chose to shelve the project. Fahey, who eventually went on to record music under her own name, spent years attempting to retrieve the ownership rights of #3. In 2003, the label relented and Fahey independently distributed the record through her website the following year.
In 2011 an expanded edition of #3 was produced and sold exclusively through the official Shakespears Sister website, however the release has now been confirmed to be released worldwide through Warner music group in 2012. This set contains the original album plus a bonus disc of unreleased tracks and demo's from the #3 recording sessions.
